It is such beautiful weather here in BC now. Summer has finally arrived and we are all wanting to be outside. With that in mind we return today to a practice we introduced a few months ago, the parable walk. This is simply the practice of going for a slow walk where you pay particular attention to the Spirit of God, who walks with you. What do you have the sense that God is wanting to show you or share with you today?

Taking a Parable Walk

The purpose of this is to take a walk out-of-doors with Jesus.

To prepare for this walk, take a few deep breaths and “centre yourself” into a moment of quiet, asking the Holy Spirit to accompany you throughout this walk, protecting you and shielding you from your most lethal distraction.

Determine the direction you feel most invited, and begin to walk.

Acknowledge Jesus is right with you. Ask Jesus to teach you along the way.

Prayerfully, notice the finer details of your surroundings.
Walk slowly.
Move intentionally.
Listen carefully.
Smell deeply.
Look alertly.
Touch curiously.
Speak rarely.

When something catches your attention, stop and look attentively.
Ask God what God has for you in this moment.

Stay focused; engage your whole self in this moment. Linger long and let God’s quiet voice tell you a “kingdom lesson,” some timely application for your present life.

When the “kingdom lesson” seems to draw to a close, give yourself time and space to journal or somehow reflect on this moment.

Continue your “Parable Walk” and repeat this rhythm as often as necessary.

May you know God’s blessing upon you during your time together today.
