A few years back when I was a brand new baby Christian, fresh out of the Alpha Course and new to the 9am Worship Praise band, the Worship Leader and I went to a large Worship Conference in Edmonton. Being greatly inspired on our return, I tried my hand at song writing. My first piece was called “Forgiveness”.

Now, you may smile and think “Aw that’s so cute…a brand new lamb trying her hand at such an enormous topic”. And you’d be right.

I’d gone through the Alpha Course a couple of times and the topic of Forgiveness had really struck a chord in me.

You’ll be grateful to know, that song has never seen the light of day but I don’t think I was too far off having the attitude that Jesus wants to grow in us.

I won’t put you through the whole thing, but the gist of my writing was that forgiving someone who may or may not even know how they’ve wronged you, is one of the most difficult things we can ever try to do and I know in my life there are a couple of people from my past who I have to keep forgiving over and over, putting me in that “77” category.

(Matt 18: 22 “Jesus answered, “I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times.”)

Holding onto a grudge is hard work, it can deform your character over time, making you grumpy and not very Christlike. And so often the person who is begrudged, has no idea! They’re going on with their life completely unaware that you’re all twisted up like a pretzel about something they potentially didn’t intend. Forgiveness doesn’t help the one who hurt you, it serves to heal you.

Anyway, the point is: it doesn’t matter if, like me, you forgive someone then take it back; it’s that you keep forgiving them…that’s the heart that Jesus can work with, the heart that depends on Him to give you grace, the heart that longs to be more like Him and see others the way He sees them, the heart that belongs to Him and worships because of who God is.

Here are a couple of pieces to help bring you closer in to God’s heart for you.

Forgiveness

Forgive Our Sins as We Forgive

Be blessed. Be free in Christ.
