Question to consider: Today’s reading raises the painful issue of betrayal. As William Bake observed, “It is easier to forgive an enemy than to forgive a friend.” Where might you have that most tender spot created by the betrayal by a friend? From where might healing come?

Lord God, your Son our Saviour gave his body to be whipped and turned his face for humanity to spit upon. Give your servants grace to accept suffering for his sake, confident of the glory that will be revealed, through Jesus Christ our Lord who is alive and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
